1. Auckland

Auckland is the main entrance to New Zealand. It is likely that your plane will land in Auckland and the first big sign board that you will see is ‘Auckland – The City of Sails’. This city is home to more than a quarter of New Zealand population and their many yachts. Auckland is rich with its very beautiful and unusual scenery. However, I personally feel that it is known as a shopping destination in this country rather than else.

2. Rotorua

This famous tourist spot is the one suggested by my Kiwi friend. He said Rotorua is a must for anyone visited North Island. He is right, this place has beautiful landscape. Rotorua is actually a geothermally active area, so you can expect its main identity is mud pools, thermal springs, and spectacular lakes. There are a lot of man made attractions too. In fact there are too many interesting things to do here, you can stay for a week but still miss something good.

3. Lake Taupo

I never see anything like Lake Taupo. Its like sea, it waves like sea and it is huge like sea. If you ask me I will say the air here is the freshest. The largest fresh water lake in Australasia is what it is. The view is spectacular. During winter you can see the huge lake with snowy mountains as its background. I never felt any calmer than when I was there. For me Lake Taupo is the best place to live in New Zealand.

4. Matamata

This is where several important plots of the Lord of the Rings movie are filmed. The major one is the Hobbit village. You can take Hobbiton Tours to see remainder of Hobbit holes and sets. If you have a chance to stop at this town you will see that everything is about LOTR. I have a chance to pull Golum’s ears there (of course it was just the sculpture of that strange fellow).

5. Wellington

I like Wellington more than Auckland. The city feels classy, less crowded, and the people looks nice (maybe not everybody can agree with me). An unforgettable place is the city museum. It called Te papa, has very interesting collection, the interior design of this museum is very modern and the collection is (as usual) very old but they mange to put this two elements together very well. If you want to continue your New Zealand holidays to South Island then you can take Interislander ferry in Wellington.

New Zealand Critiques and Complains! (New Zealand Holidays)

While a lot of things are beautiful in New Zealand, this country is not perfect. Most of you, I think, are also interested to know whats bad about NZ. Lets see:

1. New Zealand Immigration - I refer particularly to Student Visa application. For my years of study in NZ I have applied the visa three times. I got three years government scholarship yet they ask me to apply student visa every year (which mean I pay the application fee every year). My sponsor covers my tuition fee and living expenses for the period of three years, so what is the problem of not giving me a three year valid student visa?

The thing that adds to my 'uneasiness' is my friends who hold same scholarship is given three year and one or two got even four year visa. When I made a complain the NZ immigration reply was I did not clearly request for a three year visa. For the love of God, I did not make such a 'small' mistake.

2. The weather - The weather is extreme for people who live in the middle or centre of the north island (this is where I live). To be exact in Waikato. Maybe it is just for me, it is freezing during the winter night (minus degree) but relatively warm during the afternoon. Sometimes, I wear warm cloth in winter morning but end up sweating in the afternoon. It is difficult if it is suddenly very warm while you are driving.

A point to note that New Zealand sun could be 'harsher' than one that shines in your home country. The ozone is thinner!

Very strange, I could not think of other than these two complains. Maybe after all New Zealand is a nice place to live and to visit!

This is the only castle in New Zealand. It is situated somewhere in Otago Peninsula, Dunedin (South Island, NZ).

It is claimed in Larnach Castle website that it was "built in 1871 by William Larnach, merchant baron and politician, for his beloved first wife Eliza. 200 workmen spent three years building the Castle shell and master European craftsmen spent a further 12 years embellishing the interior.

Larnach spared no expenses on his dream home, which features the finest materials from around the world".

I visited this Castle in early April 2008. I don't think this is the most beautiful castle ever built but given that it is the only one in this Kiwi land it is certainly worth a visit.

One of wonders of New Zealand is its manuka honey. I have heard that there is a unique substance that makes manuka honey 'special' compared to other kinds of honey. The substance called UMF (unique manuka factor). The higher the UMF the higher its quality. Manuka honey with highest UMF, if I am not mistaken, they call it clinical grade manuka honey is good for healing burned skin etc.

I have experience taking manuka honey regularly. I take one spoon (plus a half glass of warm water) every morning and evening (sometime more). One of the benefit of taking the honey that I realized is I have more energy and I feel my body is lighter. I can do my reading and writing longer than before. I mean I can focus on my work better than without taking honey. There are other benefits of taking this honey too.

I always like to see New Zealand sheep. They look white, soft, and clean from far (this is not always the case when we see them closely). I catch this photos somewhere in New Zealand's North Island. FYI, in New Zealand the number of sheep is greater than the number of this country's population!

If you visit New Zealand then don't forget to buy this country's sheep skin products as a souvenir. Its cheaper to buy them in countryside I think because they are sold by the people who produce them. An exception though, several shops in Rotorua (a nice place to visit) sell souvenirs at a good price!

Wife of mine wanted to catch photos before New Zealand autumn 2007 ends. So, in one fine late afternoon we went for a walk. It was not a bad one though, we managed to catch several good photos including the one that I put in this post.

I always a fan of late afternoon photography. I like to see long shadows form by the yellow late afternoon sun in photos. Even though in this photo there is no late evening shadow, but there is an effect of the yellow late afternoon sun. Hope you enjoy this New Zealand late autumn scenery as much as my wife and me did.

Raglan is surfer paradise in New Zealand, at least that's what its claims itself. My friends and me plus my wife went there in November 2006. It was a weekend picnic. We planned to take a boat trip which we can see good scenery - sea, islands, strange rocks formation etc. Unfortunately it was not happen, the trip was fully booked on that day. It was a frustrating day then.

However, we saw something good on the way back from Raglan. As everybody knows, New Zealand is a house of natural beauties. My friends and me stopped at a waterfall. I cant remember the name of the place, but the photo is there next to this writing. This photo was taken from a look out. Travel in New Zealand, you will never be disappointed!
